“Do you ever wish that time travel was real?” Going back and changing some things that seem messed up in the present. The Canadian singer/songwriter Julian Taylor reflects on this in his gorgeous new song “Ain’t Life Strange.” The song reminds me of Scottish musician Al Stewart, whose music I have always enjoyed.

The Hudson Valley-based singer/songwriter Lea Thomas has a favorite trail that “starts in an open meadow and winds into the woods.” This could be Comeau property near Woodstock, NY, which we highly recommend for connecting with nature for a couple of hours. But listen to Lea’s new song “The Gift” first: it gives you a slow-building sonic map of the small and big wonders of the outdoors.
We’re going back to the city with Austin three-piece Urban Heat. Their 80s-tinged, hard-hitting track “You’ve Got That Edge” means to empower you to embrace your true self. “Humans make changes for all kinds of deeply personal reasons, and doing so can be scary and isolating, so we wanted to remind anyone who feels isolated that they are a force of nature,” says singer Jonathan Horstmann.
If you made a significant step forward in life and regret creeps in, the London singer/songwriter Izzy S.Ohas a message for you: even when you feel like drowning, keep your head over water and swim on. “Homesick” is an upbeat, guitar-driven pop song meant to defy the gravity of living outside your comfort zone. “It makes me want to give my younger self a hug to remind her that she’s strong enough to do all the things,” Izzy says.
“Woooooooooo!” The new song “How to Walk” by the Manchester band W.H. Lung brims with positive energy. Their upcoming album Every Inch of Earth Pulsates, out on October 11, marks a new chapter hi for the band working with producer Ross Orton. “Ross is the Sheffield Steve Albini,” according to singer Joseph Evans.
“Something you could easily imagine a girl like me making in a back house by the beach just tinkering away over the past couple of years,” says Casey Kalmenson, who makes music as Little Monarch, about her new song “We Got That Feeling.” Out of this came a chill, retro-futuristic track that makes you count down the days until her debut, Plenty of Time drops.
If the last song sent you into a dreamy state, stay there a little longer with Scotland via California artist Alas De Liona. “Violet” is the second single of her upcoming album Gravity of Gold, out on September 13.
