Wilby - Pleaser

Singer/songwriter Wilby, née Maria Crawford exchanged the suburbs of Philadelphia with Nashville's vibrant music scene, and released a double single. The indie-rock gem "Pleaser" and the quieter yet equally touching "Spin." The two singles also mark Wilby's debut on the Hit the North label. Asked about "Pleaser," Maria says:
“'Pleaser' came from a place of understanding the dynamics of my relationship with my partner, in both admiring his self-sacrificial tendencies while also questioning if those behaviours are genuine, and more importantly healthy. While there is no question of devotion, there is questioning of real trust on both ends. Ultimately, it’s a reflection on the fine line between love and submission, comfortability and control, and how sometimes the desire to please can cloud the safeness of a relationship.”
The song is accompanied by a face-to-camera video, directed by Crawford and Ryan Hartley, filmed in Nashville on an unusually nice day in January. Maria says about the clip:
“I wanted the video to be simple thematically so that the focus could be on the song itself,” says Wilby. “Pulling away from the hyper melodrama of previous visuals, I’m in a phase of wanting to be earnestly me.”
