VIDEO FRIDAY: Dry Cleaning - Magic of Meghan

I loved “Magic of Meghan” by London-based quartet Dry Cleaning from the spot, together with its smart and compelling video. “Magic of Meghan” got a visual treatment that lets you guess what might happen next or which sheer endless other possibilities there are.

The video was created by Sheffield-based artist Lucy Vann, who investigates, records and reinterprets overlooked behaviors and occurrences in the everyday. Lyrically, the song celebrates the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

When asked about their new single, vocalist Florence Shaw provides:

“The song acknowledges that following the lives of those in the public eye can provide people with an escape; an outlet for difficult emotions, and subsequently help them to cope with hard times in their lives. The song is, in part, intended to serve as a thank you to Meghan for this service (‘You got engaged on the day that I moved out. It’s ok. She’s a smasher, perfectly suited to the role’). The song also aims to highlight how the news media dissect her decisions (‘Never has one outfit been designed, to send so many messages’) and the creative ways they conceal the misogyny and racism that is sometimes behind what they write about her (‘You’re just what England needs, you’re going to change us’).”

Living in New York City, which is its on little cosmos, the references to Meghan Markle were not clear to me but I am glad the band pointed them out. “Magic of Meghan” is a fantastic song and the music video puts the track on a whole other, magnificent, level. To make things even better, the band has their debut EP “Sweet Princess” coming out on August, 16.

For now, what the video to “Magic of Meghan”:
