TORRES - Wake to flowers [Video]
I remember with great fondness the first time I heard about TORRES and had the great fortune to see her play live SXSW 2015 on the heels of promoting her second, irresistibly fantastic album, Sprinter (2015). Hard to believe that almost ten years have gone by, but… TORRES, aka Mackenzie Scott, is gearing up to release her 6th studio album What an enormous room on January 26, 2024. The third single from that record is “Wake to flowers” with not only TORRES’s alluring signature style but also an essential and often disregarded sentiment. It very much resonates with me, as the vast majority of her songs do. In her new single, TORRES tackles our bias towards negativity, our brain’s tendency to overlook the good things and think in dark tones. “Wake to flowers” reminds you to take a step back and see how you really feel. And how things really are, and they might be so much better. As an early TORRES fan, I am delighted to see her happy and fulfilled. Mackenzie Scott says:
“I’m familiar with the disappointment that frequently follows hope. People are frighteningly resilient. We are regularly optimistic and regularly shattered by the want of something, maybe something that takes all our might and energy and then still doesn’t happen. But have you ever been anxious that things weren’t going to turn out the way you hoped, or maybe you weren’t very optimistic, and then you got everything you wanted? I feel like this happens a lot but I don’t hear it acknowledged very much. Everything I have now is something I once fought and longed for—this song is my way of keeping myself aware of that all the time.”
