SXSW Day 2 part 1: Kate Boy // Wolf Alice // Young Ejecta

Wednesday turned out to be a perfect day: we could execute our plan with no waiting times. After attending some sessions at the Convention Center, the first live show was Kate Boy at Red 7, a three piece from Sweden, who perform with electronic drums, bass and keyboards. Singer Kate Akhurst radiated excitement and joy: a great show to start off the day. We also saw a glimpse of Kate Tempest outside, but although she has a lot of buzz going, we rather secured front-row spots inside.

Wolf Alice at the Parish

The evening was kicked off by a fantastic set by Wolf Alice, a quartet from London. On the surface they do straightforward rock with two guitars, bass and drum, but what comes out are beautiful songs, perfectly balanced between melodic and heavy. Then add to it Ellie Rowsells beautiful, versatile voice. Elke and I were blown away and can’t wait for their debut album later this year.

Young Ejecta at the Main II

Back to The Main II: Young Ejecta we have already seen last November opening for Gazelle Twin at Rough Trade. She wins the prize for the most minimalistic gear: most of her brand of upbeat electropop is done on an OP-1, which could be mistaken for a toy keyboard (until you see the price tag).
