SONG PICK: SAVI MINDS - Comatose

It has been a while since we could treat ourselves to a new song by SAVI MINDS, the solo project of Los Angeles-based songwriter, singer, and producer Mikale D’Andrea. Luckily, D’Andrea was able to use the pandemic enforced slowdown and finished material he has been working on during the months leading up to the quarantine times. “Comatose” is the first taste of a flurry of more songs to come later this year.

“Comatose” is pretty much about what we thought it would be by only reading the song’s title. D’Andrea explains:

“The lyrics delve pretty deep into my self isolating tendencies, which I imagine….is a theme for many people these days”.

These reflections are embedded in mesmerizing beats, hazy synths, and dreamy vocals, which makes for an irresistible combination. The artist himself finds maybe the best words to describe his sound:

“I’ve been really inspired by the juxtaposition of dirty, grimy sounds right next to pristine ones.  Comatose has this bombastic synth bass running through the whole song, but pretty guitars and breathy vocals are shimmering above it. I think it creates a really cool mood.”

Mikale D’Andrea is active in environmental justice, and 50% of profits on bandcamp from this song go to Outward Bound Adventures, a charity that teaches outdoor education to underprivileged and BIPOC children.
