SONG PICK: Nikita Bassi - Satin
Take the debut single by Nikita Bassi at face value because as the title suggests, “Satin” is as smooth and sleek and utterly beautiful like the fabric. The London-based singer/songwriter has lived all her life in the U.K. yet likes to take influences from her Punjabi-Indian roots and adds Indian and African percussion instruments (dholak, khol, tabla) as well as bansuri flutes and cathedral organs to her music. These instruments together with her gorgeous vocals lend her sound an enchanting, airy vibe, one that is hard to resist.
Nikita Bassi very much reminds me of what I love about singer/songwriters like BANKS and FKA Twigs, and it will be exciting to follow her. For this single, she worked together with Cores (Solange, Gorgon City, The Streets) who co-produced it.
