SONG PICK: Elgin - Cherry Picked
You can not cherry-pick your moments, a sentiment that deeply resonates with me. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Heinrich Böll’s “The Clown”: One should leave moments alone, never repeat them. Repeating a favorite moment is comparable to cherry-picking. These thoughts and more are touched in Elgin‘s new single “Cherry Picked,” a beautifully melancholic folk ballad with optimistic overtones. Elgin is the new project of Anthony Furey and Paul Butler, who used to travel the world as The Young Folk,
When asked about “Cherry Picked,” Butler says:
A phrase that’s being thrown around a lot recently between friends is the idea of impostor syndrome. A feeling of self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence. It’s the feeling I get when I can’t write or I haven’t created anything for a while. It’s easy to get carried away with these thoughts and allow them to develop into something they’re not. The song is mainly about letting go of these ideas and allowing yourself to breathe.”
