SONG PICK: Blessed - Structure (Video)
Canadian art-rock band Blessed released today their new single “Structure” together with an enigmatic music video, directed by Kaayla Whachell. The single and music video announce the upcoming EP “iii” out February 19th, 2021 via Flemish Eye Records.
The four-piece carries the label “art-rock” for a reason as “Structure” does not follow a simple, classic song concept but pursues its own path with its gradually brooding build. An ever cascading piano melody over relentless drums creates an exciting state of substance and urgency. Add beautifully distorted guitars together with attention-demanding vocals, and the result is utterly appealing. When asked about the meaning and background to their new track, Blessed says:
“Structure” deals with complacency and failing to explore the depths of your actions compared to the words you espouse and values you proclaim to have. If you can’t acknowledge your imperfection and flaws, you don’t leave room to listen and grow. If you’re always trying to teach, you can’t be taught.
About the EP, Blessed’s frontman Drew Riekman says:
We looked at a lot of hip-hop records and were like, ‘Why are rock bands always trying to have consistency?’” asks Riekman. “Why do we care so much about consistency? If it’s art made by us, the consistency is us. For us, working with a community is probably the best aspect of creating art outside of making the art itself.
If it was not already for “Structure”, this statement makes us, even more, looking forward to EP number three. Listen to “Structure”, our Song Pick of the Day:
