SONG PICK: Austin Ward - Big Technology (Video)
Many songs come either from a personal place or are self-reflecting one in some ways, and the personal experiences shape these introspective stories. Not every musician though can take from having worked for a huge tech company yet Austin Ward can. In “Big Technology”, the Los Angeles-based producer, singer/songwriter, and guitarist contemplates his years being employed by YouTube. While this might not sound too exciting at first, the emotive lyrics and the song itself disperse any initial hesitation. The fingerpicking during the first half of the track is magnificent, the flute offers a melancholic touch and Austin Ward’s gorgeous vocals float over the production and bring it all home. While highly personal, the message of “Big Technology” is a universal one with its mission to give life purpose and joy.
Austin says about his latest single in his own words:
“Big Technology is a letter to my former self… a meditation on what has been a very incongruous journey to where I stand today, grateful and fulfilled, sharing the gift of music. The song details navigating the futile existentialism of working for a technology giant, while finding one’s true voice and higher purpose along the way. It is an emotive, self-reflective riot meant to be stomped to, that is in one part catharsis, and another a cry for help. Welcome to my autobiography.”
