Rosa Bordallo - Leavetaking
A song like Rosa Bordallo's "Leavetaking" is the perfect little pick-me-up to not fall into a Monday afternoon hole. Her music has been compared with Cate Le Bon, Melody's Echo Chamber, and Mitski, which made me curious for more. Rosa Bordallo has a new album coming out, Isidro, to drop on January 31.
Originally from the island of Guam, she has called New York City her home since she was 19 and has written, recorded, and released several albums and EPs as a solo artist and as a member of the indie rock band cholo. She says about her music-making process:
"Music has always been my outlet, my pressure valve. I was a really shy and awkward kid, but I loved listening to the albums that my older siblings brought back from the [United] States. Artists like Björk, PJ Harvey, David Bowie and Pixies. I wanted to have an impact the way those musicians impacted me, on the other side of the world."
About the energizingly beautiful "Leavetaking," Rosa says:
“This song is a callback to the first song on the album, ‘Home’ - but then it veers off into its own universe. It’s a wistful song, but also joyful. And in a weird way about getting older. I don’t think anyone likes being in the rat race and yet we often find ourselves there anyway. Time spent with loved ones. That’s what I’d like to strive for. Everything else is secondary.”
