April 27th, the basement lounge at The Delancey was nicely packed from the get-go and got humming this way throughout the performances of all the bands until the DJs took over for the rest of the night.

Sophie Colette kicked of the night with her exquisite set of songs plus visual backdrop. At times, Sophie was in sync with the moving images behind her, and at other times they were just lovely embellishments. If you use a projector to enhance your live performance, Sophie Colette is the one to watch, on that level, I’ve rarely seen it done better!

With having set the bar high, Julia Kahn and the New 45s demonstrated that they came all that way for a reason: they could get booked in New York any day of the week and year! This Indianapolis-based quartet got the stage smoking: Julia with her gorgeous vocals and sunshine-smile, and her band mates with this skillful moves on guitar, synths, bass and drums. Someone to follow.

The only act this evening we had seen live before, and all the more anticipated: Kid Midnight. They make music as a three-piece with vocals plus the occasional saxophone action thrown in, drums and… how do you even call a digital wiz? Let’s go with the band’s description: “Master Producer/Hair Spinner”. Well, listen to Kid Midnight’s new single “Deja Vu” that they premiered at the show, and come out to any or better yet all of their upcoming shows. They are super fun. Promised.

Wrapping up the night beautifully were Scam Avenue, who got us and the crew laughing so hard during sound check. Their live set was expectedly more serious and more ethereal and definitely highly enjoyable. With vocals, keys, guitar, bass and drums they segued in a way from Julia Kahn and the New 45s, but with a more electronic, experimental vibe.

Even the most exciting events must sadly come to an end but the buzz was still going long after the last gear had been stored away. Get an impression of the show by clicking on the photos, listen to the bands’ music, and come out to our next show:
