Hello Mary - Three
“Three,” the new single by Brooklyn trio Hello Mary, was sent out in the world without conveying a specific message. But then, the song claimed a particular meaning for the band, as songwriter Helena Straight recalls:
“Three was written after I’d been in a creative rut that lasted a couple of months. I wasn’t focused on getting any message across – my intention was just to write a full song, whether I ended up liking it or not. Though it doesn’t have a specific intended meaning, the imagery is fitting for the band: Oxes are strong and resilient, and much of Emita Ox’s subject matter reveals Hello Mary’s perseverance, as they choose to move through life’s burdens instead of getting beaten down by them.”
Maybe that works for you, too. Indeed, how the song meanders to its grand finale reflects a path of resiliency until, finally, the sun shines again.
