Emily Bowen - Agnes
It would be easy to dismiss a young musician of only 20 years as 'lucky' or 'well-connected,' yet there are years of hard work and determination behind Emily Bowen's debut album. Making music since she was 14, she was allowed to transform her parents' home office into a music studio, equipping it with music gear that she saved money for, and that's how she recorded her songs. All the while, she knocked on doors of Copenhagen’s most legendary music studios, where she eventually was offered a record deal. Hence, she took her time to grow and get ready, as Emily says in her own words:
“I have an enormous drive and, if I'm allowed, I can run like a machine. But I've also learned to take my time. When I got my record deal at 18, I had already been working on my music for almost four years. It's also about being able to keep up as a human being, instead of giving in to the time and tempo that the world around you is trying to follow."
From Emily Bowen's debut album Hate Me for This, we chose the lead single "Agnes" as our third Song Pick of the Day in 2025. The track is bright and bouncy and flows beautifully. It whets the appetite to hear more from this Danish-American artist based in Copenhagen. Of course, there's a story about "Agnes," as Emily explains:
“I met Agnes a couple summers ago when I was backpacking around Europe. We sat on a couch and talked for three hours - sucked into each other’s worlds in that moment that only the two of us shared and had together. Agnes moved on to Paris, and we’ve been strangers to each other ever since. But I took the moment along with me, bittersweet and beautiful, like the lifelong exercise of being honest with yourself.”
