CHVRLI BLVCK - Why Did You Go

“People are already walking in my house,” sings London-based singer/songwriter Charli Black aka  CHVRLI BLVCK, in his gorgeous and irresistibly moving new single “Why Did You Go.” No doubt, there’s a lot of hardship and melancholia here when Charli states, “The furniture walks itself out to somebody else’s house.”

In addition, it’s also clear that there’s a songwriter who is highly skilled in using strong images and poignant metaphors to paint a moving scenario. Add Charli’s warm and versatile tenor, which evokes Jeff Buckley’s, and a production that softly layers all vocals and instruments, culminating in a crescendo that, in the end, ebbs down again. Like an emptied-out house in which you’re left alone. This is achingly beautiful and makes me want to start listening immediately all over again! I had asked Charli whether he could give us a bit more background to “Why Did You Go,” and he says:

“The most painful song I have released, it’s not at arms length, about being disillusioned with how messed up the world can be, or anything vague or external. It is specific and candid, and personal, and it makes me feel pretty naked letting it out into the world.”
