Another Nguyen - Irreplaceable
Two days ago, while listening to a female electro-pop artist and then just letting Spotify do its algorithm thing, I came across a song that really resonated with me, and I immediately wanted to listen to again: “Irreplaceable.” It’s the new single by Another Nguyen, an alt-pop singer/songwriter based in Berlin, Germany. Born to Vietnamese working-class parents, Ngoc Anh Nguyen grew up in a small town in Germany, always trying to fit in.
Naturally, aside from the atmospheric track itself, this is a story that piqued my interest. I reached out to Another Nguyen, who kindly answered my questions about the song’s inspiration and background. “Irreplaceable” delights with a moody vibe, enchanting vocals, and a sophisticated pop production. Turns out, the track was produced and mixed by an all-female engineering team and took inspiration from artists like Robyn, Anne-Marie, and Dagny. Ngoc Anh says about “Irreplaceable:”
“I wrote this song when I was in a long distance relationship and I noticed that I was starting to feel very disconnected from my partner. Apart from the relationship my life was going very well as my career was starting to develop. I made lots of new experiences and felt like I was growing a lot. I was upset that my partner was never part of these experiences and surprised at the same time how well I was doing without him.”
She explains further:
“With this song I tried to capture the feeling of being torn; a moment in the relationship where things were uncertain and a lot of different emotions co-existed at the same time. The memories of being with my partner kept fading and I wondered if I’d do better without the other person? I knew that things needed to change but breaking up also didn’t feel right.”
Maybe it’s not always black or white. Maybe there’s a way to make it work? Best Wishes! Listen to “Irreplaceable,” our Song Pick of the Day:
