“They Wouldn’t Let Me In,” the new single by Australian singer/songwriter Alex Lahey, has such a beautiful and vibrant post-punk vibe that I cannot get enough of it! Alex Lahey is not always that obvious in her songwriting, neither sonically nor lyrically, and the track has a more profound meaning than the super catchy melody with nods to Bauhaus lets on. I can see “They Wouldn’t Let Me In” used in any movie soundtrack that needs something cool with an inherent urgency and beauty. I can totally envision “They Wouldn’t Let Me In” in any 80s movie with high school cliques of mean girls or mean boys or both; I remember plenty of such films, and not fitting in happens in many different forms.

Alex Lahey tells us about her thought process and how her new song came together. She says:

“After watching the brilliant tv series ‘Heartstopper,’ I spent a lot of time thinking about my own experiences growing up as a queer teenager. Although I was extremely lucky that the majority of my experience was filled with joy, acceptance and love, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. This song is inspired by those tougher moments – not being allowed to attend my high school girlfriend’s school formal, being excluded from conventional romantic rites of passage, moments of isolation and feeling like I couldn’t relate to anyone around me. ‘They Wouldn’t Let Me In’ is by far the most direct song I’ve ever written about this time.”
