SONG PICK: Richard Orofino - Rather Die (Video)
If not now, whenever is the time for boldness? Speaking plainly and with purpose? Alone by its lyrics, “Rather Die” touches a nerve and we were intrigued already. Add a heavy dose of ’80s nostalgia, crips vocals, and a catchy, electronic production with warm vibes, and here goes an irresistibly lovely tune! “Rather Die” is the new single and video by Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and producer Richard Orofino. Only 22 years old now, Richard has been writing and producing music since 2013 already, when he started to learn the piano, adding drums and guitar later on. Over hundreds of songs later, he has been honing his craft, making a name for himself, as a solo artist but also as a thought after collaborator.
When asked about “Rather Die”, Richard offers:
“‘Rather Die’ is a love song for the end of the world and about overwhelming love. You would expect it to be a fairly dark tune by its title, but the story describes imagining a world without the person you hold closest to your heart. Being able to say you would “rather die” than live in this fictional reality is super dramatic, which is kind of the point of the song. The premise screams ultra-romance to a point of it being almost silly. I felt a natural inspiration from the “New Romantic” genre of the 80’s, alongside some modern Indie/pop anthemic landscapes. My vision was to create a love letter that feels like you’re driving into a black hole but still filled with hope.”

Lyrics
There’s something in the water babe
I feel it when we touch
There’s something in the water babe
And we drank too much
You’re lips don’t move the same
My ears won’t open up
I can’t hear what you say
Anymore
Living in a world
Where you can’t see my face
I’d rather die instead
I’d rather die instead
Tangled in a crowd
And I can’t hear your voice
I’d rather die instead
I’d rather die instead
There’s something in that water babe
It’s poisoned red
Swallowing the both of us
And now it’s in our bed
You’re eyes ain’t lookin twice
We may be out of luck
And now my blood’s running dry
Is there a cure
Living in a world
Where you can’t see my face
I’d rather die instead
I’d rather die instead
Tangled in a crowd
And I can’t hear your voice
I’d rather die instead
I’d rather die instead
Our bodies on fire
But we still cannot let go
Our bodies our liars
But who’s gonna let them know
You fall asleep when u talk to me
But we still dream when we fall asleep
Living in a world
Where you can’t see my face
I’d rather die instead
I’d rather die instead
Tangled in a crowd
And I can’t hear your voice
I’d rather die instead
I’d rather die instead
