SONG PREMIERE: Polyphia – 40oz

Inspired as it is inspiring, playful but also with a hint of restraint, perusing all major elements of modern songwriting, “40oz” is only on the surface a must for guitar aficionados but essentially for music fans across multiple genres because the track simply awesome! “40oz” is the new single by Dallas-based instrumental quartet Polyphia, comprised of Tim Henson (guitar), Scott LePage (guitar), Clay Gober (bass) and Clay Aeschliman (drums), who climbed all sorts of charts with their 2014 album “Muse“.

While Polyphia usually get described as ‘progressive metal’, they clearly broaden and update their style with “40oz” which is light, lively and joyful yet still with the cherished artistry:

“40oz started as guitars over what we thought sounded kind of like a Waveracer style chord progression. Y2K jumped on the track and implemented his style of heavy trap beat production, making the sub bass really intense and the whole song generally bouncy and fun to listen to. We named the song 40oz because we like to drink 40’s and it’s definitely the most upbeat on the record.”

When there are no lyrics to go by, then every bit of sound and visuals as well become all the more important. I was wondering about the expressive cover art for Polyphia’s upcoming album, from which “40oz” is taken. Why the title “The Most Hated”? Why the excessive jewelry? Here is what Polyphia want to convey and it is amazing where they are coming from and intend to go with:

“The theme of this EP is basically a slight to the normal backlash from the scene that we come from (instrumental guitar music). There is a very close minded, hateful mentality towards any sort of deviance from the norm, so we’re basically embracing the hate, and we thought that calling it “The Most Hated” would be more than appropriate since we knew many of our current fans would be opposed to our drastic style shift and not appreciate the elements of hip hop and electronic music showcased in the actual music.”
