PHOTOS: K. Flay goes wild at Bowery Ballroom (with Paper Route & Daye Jack)
It is a challenge to describe the music of K. Flay: there is rock, hip hop, electronic in it, but it is also catchy and disarmingly straightforward. “How did a girl like me end up in a world so mean?” she sings in “Black Wave” and most of us probably have had thoughts along that line, particularly when reading the news lately.
On the stage of Bowery Ballroom, K. Flay presents herself simultaneously as your best friend and the girl who is too cool to speak to you. In all black and torn jeans she has something of an avenging angel, but also of that confused person she describes in the lyrics like the ones above. She sings, raps, plays guitar, bass and keyboard and from time to time bounces around the stage like crazy: meet the pop star who doesn’t tell you that – in the end – all that matters is looking good.
Opening the night were the charismatic rapper Daye Jack from Atlanta and Nashville pop three-piece Paper Route.
