THROWBACK: Siouxsie And The Banshees - Christine
When thinking of a song for glamglare’s weekly segment “Life Soundtrack”, I instantly thought of Siouxsie, of Siouxsie And The Banshees, because I’ve been musing a lot about female voices this week and just yesterday compared Emma Ruth Rundle’s voice with Siousxie’s when reviewing the new album by Marriages. And when thinking of Siouxsie, I remember one song in particular: Christine.
When Christine came out 1980, it was on power play in my hometown’s clubs, the two I’ve frequented. Back then though, I had no idea what this song is about but more than a quarter century later and thanks to the web, I know that it is about a mental illness, personality disorder.
I also think that there’s never just a “funny coincidence” but everything makes sense in a broader scheme – with a couple of exceptions, of course. (Some events in life just never make sense!).
Coincidentially, also yesterday, I watched the new video that Jonny Hawkins, the lead singer of Nothing More has been working on (while touring the world – literally!) which has a different, and more prevalent mental illness as core topic: schizophrenia. The lyrical, musical as well as the visual approach are naturally different from Siouxsie And The Banshees (they have a FB page!) to Nothing More.
Not even sure if I can really throw a curve ball from Christine to Jenny, yet I give it a try and close with the video to Jenny because – it deserves exposure.
