THROWBACK: The Cure – A Forest

A Forest is a wonderfully simple song: a simple, repeating melody, a drum machine, some guitar and Robert Smith’s voice make for a dark, melancholic and a little menacing mood that immediately sticks to your mind. A Forest came out 1980 on the Cure’s second album Seventeen Seconds, but I got into it years later as part of a Cure obsession that started around 1984.

I didn’t pay much attention to the lyrics back then, which are quite simple too and even a German kid could have made sense of them. That’s a shame, because they accurately describe how I often felt in that phase of my life:

The girl was never there,

It’s always the same,

I’m running towards nothing

Again and again and again and again
