NEW ALBUM: Girlpool - Girlpool
Strictly speaking, it’s not really a new release and it’s also not a full length album but the self-titled Girlpool by the L.A. duo Girlpool came out this week by Witchita Recordings. The 7 songs on the EP, none of which hits the 3 minutes mark, have been recorded earlier this year and are now available through the London label in remastered form. Nothing is lost though of the rawness and accessibility of the material. At times, Girlpool reminded me of another female L.A. band, who excels in this way of singing harmonies: Warpaint.
Cleo Tucker and Harmony Moon form Girlpool: two women with strong voices, armed with two guitars, create catchy songs with instant hooks and hefty lyrics. There are no drums, and there’s no keyboard or laptop addition either, and yet the music sounds rich and satisfying in its rawness. One analogy that came to mind after listening to this album is like biting into a freshly baked sourdough bread topped with nothing else but creamy, slightly salted butter. I love big, lush music, yet Girlpool is refreshingly beautiful in its simplicity. It’ll be highly interesting with what the duo comes up with next. For now, there’s this debut EP to be enjoyed!
